The Acupuncture Evidence Project highlights research suggesting acupuncture plus SSRIs are superior to SSRIs alone. Acupuncture was deemed to offer an early onset of action and was considered safe and well-tolerated. Electro-acupuncture had greater effects than manual acupuncture.

The same project also highlights research revealing acupuncture to be effective and safe for major depressive disorder, especially in improving sleep, mood and quality of life.

Finally, the Acupuncture Evidence Project links to research suggesting acupuncture is cost-effective compared with counselling or usual care alone, although the ranking of counselling and acupuncture does depend on the cost of delivering these therapies.
